How many tribal aunts, uncles and cousins does it take to build a great Scholar?  Apparently the number varies--but one thing that is sure--when we create Tribal Communities of our own, we create safe places for the seeds of scholarship to be nurtured and grow.  Because a culture emerges which values quality and transformational education, we build mentors and peers that support the growth of scholarship in themselves and in others.  A Tribal Community gives the love, support, and caring that is needed for growth but, more importantly, it also provides the challenges in which

Elizabeth is a mother of 8, grandmother of 14 and midwife of 1,211. She began her training as a midwife in 1985 and has practiced for 27 years. She recently opened the first birthing center in St. George, Utah and is a regular guest speaker at Dixie State College and local community events. She is a published author and has appeared on TV, radio and in various newspaper and magazine articles. Elizabeth credits much of her knowledge to others who have gone before her and believes in being open minded to all philosophies of healthcare.

Is English a broken language? We have been led to believe that it is illogical and irregular, complicated and difficult to learn. Ignorance of our language is the barrier and stumbling block to personal and political liberty. English is the most powerful language in the world – for thinking and for social freedom. How we teach it matters as much as whether or not we teach it. Students stumble over reading and writing. Their lack of information and skills affects thinking, reading, comprehension, and communication.

My Transition to Scholar child listened attentively as I discussed my learning to read workshop with her father. She summed up hours worth of work in one sentence. “So, Mom . . . basically, you read a lot, work through some reading lessons, and make it a big deal to read. That will be a short workshop.” This workshop will present suggestions of tried and true books children love to read as well as suggestions for finding books your little ones will beg you to read again and again.

A person becomes a leader when they have learned how to govern themselves. What do leaders like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington teach us about self government? They teach us that to change yourself, you have to do four key things. These four keys to self government are for anyone to use, in any phase of life. They are simple and logical, but not readily done by most people. These four keys are the keys to happiness, emotional freedom, improved relationships, and leadership.
